I fear parking in Brookline more than any other city. Some years ago, I was given a ticket despite very immediate signs that indicated the permissibility of parking overnight at a certain place. Turns out that these signs were misleading (deliberately misleading, one could argue); Brookline does not allow overnight parking just about anyplace. I appealed my ticket, submitting a photograph of the sign indicating permission so proximate to my car, yet my appeal was turned down. So, grudgingly, I promptly paid the fine. Almost a year later, I had to renew my registration and found out I couldn't do so because Brookline said I had to still pay a parking ticket plus fines for being late with it. Same one I'd paid. I found evidence that the check had been cashed by looking at my bank statements and wrote to them, but they refused this. I finally had to, in the interest of time, pay about three times more than the original bogus ticket in order to get this take care of. Do the math: I paid four times what I should have had the ticket been legitimate. Needless to say, I saved my receipt and even electronically scanned it in case they tried to screw me again. Brookline Parking Police are essentially an organized crime racket, albeit with the legitimacy of a municipality behind them. You don't want to run afoul these folks! I've heard dozen of other stories about parking in Brookline and would encourage everyone to share theirs so as to at least make the citizens of Brookline feel at least a little ashamed of such criminality taking place at their behest.

"Brookline Parking Police are a legitimized crime racket, albeit with the legitimacy of a municipality behind them." This statement is so true. While visiting town in a rental car I received two parking tickets within the same 4 hour window of time. There were no signs indicating that I could not park there for these hours on the whole street. I followed the rules and appealed both tickets with pictures. My appeal was accepted and I paid the $10 overnight guest fee. I thought this was a very reasonable decision and was more than happy to oblige. I was also notified that Brookline Parking Police believe that notice at major entry ways into Brookline is sufficient notice." Which means as you cross town lines you should be looking for parking signs indicating when/where you can park. However, these signs are usually small parking signs, unlit and placed at Brookline borders that would not be known to visitors. One month later, the rental car company charged me for both tickets. I called the parking clerk's office to be told that only one ticket was appealed (even though both numbers and descriptions were marked as approved in my email). I was told that I would need to file an appeal with the superior court if I would like to appeal this case. The minimum fee to file a case is $275 and the process could take 9 months or more. The very kind woman on the phone at the superior court informed me that Brookline could drain my time, energy and money if I decided to do this. She also said that they would have an advantage because law enforcement and judges work together. Brookline parking police are running a crime racket and are gouging visitors to the Boston area by not making laws clear and appropriately posting the rules they wish to impose. They know they can force people into paying unnecessary tickets due to their municipality status and the high financial threshold it would take to appeal a decision.
